A Few Thoughts On Giving To Greenleaf
“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops”
-Proverbs 3:9
Jesus taught that our money is an indicator of our hearts. Paul taught that if we are loved by God and love Him in return, we will give cheerfully, sacrificially, and regularly to our local faith community. In our digital age when people are increasingly paying bills and conducting commerce online, we have chosen to make online giving available to those who are interested. Some may protest that in the Bible God’s people never used credit to tithe, which is true. They also did not use checks or get tax deductions either. Nonetheless, the principle is that God’s people should give, and the methods vary from culture to culture. From a pastor in a cashless bartering society who receives animals or milk as part of a tithe to a suburban American church that passes an offering plate to collect cash and checks, the point is simply that we honor God with the first of all our wealth; in a digital economy that can also include giving online.
You are free to give via the offering taken up in the weekly service, by mailing your contribution to the church PO box, or now by the internet, and we welcome you to give whatever God has enabled you to give. The technology that permits online transactions via debit cards also permits giving via credit cards and makes no distinction between the two. We strongly urge you not to put your tithe on your credit card unless they are able to pay it off each month because we do not believe we should carry heavy consumer debt. But, if you intend to pay off your balance each month, then we leave that between you, God, and your frequent flier miles. Please also be aware that Paypal takes a percent of what you give online: about $3 for each hundred that you give. If you would rather 100% of your donation to go directly to the church, then please give by one of the other methods listed above. If you have further questions about tithes and offerings please contact us.
