No Waste Potluck Brunch

rodger Events

At Greenleaf there’s no question we love to eat together. From the old annual Family Dinners, to cookouts on our lawn, to small groups created for the very purpose of sharing meals together. We love to gather and we love to eat, and when those things combine for us, heaven meets earth!
The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it;
for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters.
Who may ascend the mountain of the LORD?
Who may stand in his holy place?
The one who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not give their heart to an idol.
-Psalm 24:1-4
But one thing we’ve never attempted is a congregational effort to reduce the waste we create when we eat together. The earth is the Lord’s, and he has given us stewardship over it, so it is imperative we become more conscientious of our impact on the creation (that’s the “clean hands” part). There are such simple things we can do as a church!
Introducing the No Waste Potluck Brunch
Have you heard the story of the Zero Waste Church in Raleigh? It all started one week when they decided to make as little waste as possible at their pancake supper. What resulted? One tiny bag of trash and a church who began to believe that they could make a difference by creating less waste at their gatherings. We’re intrigued and inspired, and we think we can do even better!
The Challenge
On June 30th from 10am-noon, we will gather in our sanctuary to share a meal as our worship experience that week. And you can help facilitate our efforts to reduce the church’s waste at our Potluck Brunch by doing as many of the following as you are able:
  • Provide your own reusable plates and utensils to use at brunch. (We’ll have extras if needed.)
  • Compost & recycle during the brunch. (Special receptacles will be ready to go!)
  • Bring food and take home extras in a reusable container.
  • Bonus points: Bring cloth napkins and reusable cups!
We invite you to consider each of the above as a spiritual discipline or an act of worship. Each are something that you can do to honor God by caring for his creation. Arrive at 10am to help get the buffet line set up. Our meal will begin at 10:30 with Communion.
